We decided to do our own painting! We are going to start by painting the red brick shades of grey to compliment the vinyl. I'm also going to add some creative touches to make the exterior feel warm and inviting. I can't wait to see the building finished! The entire inside needs to be built, including HVAC, plumbing, flooring, walls and ceilings. So happy we had the chance to design the interior for our fur buddies!

It was originally black with gold accents. When I purchased it, I knew I wanted to refinish it for a display at our future business location (yet to be determined). After pondering for months, I gave it a white base coat and decided to use the #zentangle method along with my favorite markers, #Sharpies I love the vibrant colors of Sharpies! Heres a sneak peak of my progress so far.

Crates give dogs a sense of security. They naturally look for places to protect themselves from the environment. This tool therefore helps with anxiety which may be caused by their surroundings, fireworks, active children, and other animals. The crate gives them a place to hide and feel safe.

It also helps put dog owners’ minds at ease, when they are unable to supervise their dog’s activities. They know their dog is safe in the crate and not getting into trouble. It also makes traveling easier and safer. Another important benefit is if there is an emergency, the dog is already comfortable with using the crate. This is definitely no the time to introduce them to the crate. It will most likely add to their anxiety.

Crate training should be a slow process and needs to be a positive experience. I recently watched Zak George on YouTube. He has some very informative videos on this subject. Here’s one to start: https://youtu.be/hesi8WxLWVE

Zak does plug Contour Crate by Mid West for the crate of his choice. https://www.midwesthomes4pets.com/product/30-contour-dog-crate He likes the two doors with divider panel. The ones I purchased for my dog are the Retriever single door crates with a divider panel at Tractor Supply. I wish they had the double doors when I went there. At the time, I couldn’t be picky. However Tractor Supply does carry the double door version. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/retriever-2-door-dog-wire-crate

A very important side note! Do not crate your puppy with a collar or harness on. It’s a very unsafe practice which can result in strangulation.

One final note, there are different kinds of crates for different situations. The metal crate is great for everyday use, while the plastic crate (not chew proof) is perfect for traveling. Soft side crates are ok for going shopping or traveling in the airplane cabin with your dog, however, don’t leave them unattended. They may be able to break through the fabric and screen.

I am so happy I crate trained my dogs. They feel very comfortable with their crates. I find them regularly resting in them with the door open. They even crate themselves up when they know it’s time for me to leave the house. Wishing you great success in crate training your dogs!

Did you know you can use salt to fix a broken ice sculpture? The reason I know this is because, in the 90’s, I was a professional ice sculptor. The most nontoxic and readily available product to use, in an emergency, was salt.

Why is that? When salt dissolves in water it releases ions which allows the water to freeze at a higher temperature. When I repaired a sculpture, with no gloves on, it was quite painful. The freezing sting sits in the back of my mind from over 20 years ago.

Dogs can experience the same reaction while walking on salted roads and sidewalks, resulting in damaged paw pads. Salt is a skin irritant that can cause pad dryness, cracking, sores and burns. But that’s not all. The salt used to treat the roads also contains ice-melting chemicals that are toxic when ingested by dogs. Dogs cannot ingest rock salt. Even if they don’t directly eat the salt off the road or drink from a puddle, they can receive the toxins through licking their paws or other parts of their body.

Consider some of the following options when walking your dog:

Use paw covers / boots
They will most likely take some time to get use to, but it’s worth the frustration. Check out this AKC article about the best dog boots for cold weather. https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/lifestyle/dog-boots-for-winter/

Wash paws in warm soapy water to get the salt and toxins off.
Wash other body parts if your dog sat down, lied down, or scaled a salty snow mound. Check this easy to use tool to quickly wash their paws. The Dexas MudBuster has good reviews: https://www.amazon.com/Dexas-MudBuster-Portable-Cleaner-Medium/dp/B01N64DCPR/ref=asc_df_B01N64DCPR/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=167132165277&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11640130735401518278&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9002215&hvtargid=pla-305741449130&th=1

Hike a nature trail
Being rock salt is also toxic to plants, it will most likely be limited to the parking area. Be sure to check your area for hunting season guidelines. Have you and your dog wear the necessary hunter’s orange apparel. Here is one of many options available for dogs https://safetypupxd.com/collections/all

Its always great to follow up a good cleaning with a nice paw moisturizer. There are many types to choose from. However I found Musher’s Secret Dog Paw Wax to be a leader in dog paw balms. https://musherssecret.com/products/ If your are a DIY person, you can make your own. It’s easy to find recipes to make your own balm.

Enjoy your winter dog walks and be safe. If you cringe at the thought of walking your dog, contact us! We offer dog walking services. https://www.looksquirrelinn.com/services

I drove Bear from Smithfield Rhode Island to Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania. He is a breeding puppy from Ocean State Labradoodles and he is going to another reputable breeder. Both breeders are members of ALAA (Australian Labradoodles Association of America). They are focused on best practices breeding, to maintain healthy dog lines. The dogs in the program are raised by local guardian families. Once the dog has done his/her breeding duties, they remain with that family for the rest of their lives. I wish every breeder used ethical breeding practices, like this! We would have a lot more happier and healthier dogs in the world.

Our Boys, Rover and Moose.

They are Australian Labradoodles and are from Ocean State Labradoodles. In this image, they are sporting their puppy coat. This was taken just before Rover’s first cut. Moose had a little ways to go before his first visit to the groomer. There is a three month age difference between the two. They are brothers from another mother, however they have the same dad, Max. Image was taken by us. We offer photography services. Please see our portfolio.
